Tanpura Facts
Both in its musical function and how it works, the tanpura is a unique instrument in many ways. The Tanpura is a four to six stringed fret less instrument made of wood, and usually combined with gourd. The characteristic tuning of an instrumental Tanpura is around middle C. The Tanpura is thus not only an ideal accompaniment for traditional Indian music, but it is also an ideal companion for any musical meditation, overtone singing or modal improvisation. In order to make singers independent while practicing, the electronic tanpura is an ideal instrument. Normally the tanpura is tuned in the tonic.
