Sensorineural Hearing Loss

There are essentially two types of hearing loss: sensorineural and conductive. Each type is distinctively different from the other in how and why hearing loss occurs, as well as how the condition is treated.  Sensorineural hearing loss is best treated through the aid of hearing instruments. Sensorineural hearing loss, which is also known in the medical field as nerve deafness, is related to the deterioration or permanent damage of inner ear membranes. Damage can occur as a part of the normal aging process, sudden trauma, fluid build-up, viral and bacterial infections, and prolonged exposure to loud noises. This type of hearing loss cannot be treated or reversed through surgery or medication.
