Authorities have taken down many sellers of so called audio spy equipment. Stuff being used to record audio illegally for all kinds of activities and missions. While you can buy many different crazy types of James Bond artifacts, and most of them are actually legal believe it or not, the audio stuff is out of limits in the United States and many western countries. In some eastern countries it’s still ok. Good news for some, bad for some others. Depends on your point of view.

The point is you just cannot use hidden audio devices to record sounds and conversations others are having, behind their back. Even if your local PI (private investigator) sells you on the idea, say thanks but no thanks. The only legal audio spy equipment is the overt voice recorder, and it’s only legal if you use it for your own conversations with someone else.
