Development of Mormon Settlements
When the Saints first arrived in the Salt Lake Valley in 1847, there was absolutely nothing there. They had to start from scratch and build a new home for themselves. There are clear records of this period of mormon history. The Saints immediately began to build Salt Lake City in a grid pattern, with the land for the temple at the center. Then Brigham Young instructed certain people to explore the surrounding land and begin to build other settlements. This is a rich part of mormon history, because so many people had already sacrificed so much, and yet they were willing to leave their homes again at the call of the prophet.
